The Cotter Dam Education Program

As part of the Cotter Dam enlargement, ACTEW Water committed to developing an education program to involve local students and help them learn about the significance of the new dam and the Cotter Precinct. The program, which is aimed at students from Kindergarten to Year 10, includes a comprehensive suite of education units and resources developed by teachers, for teachers. The curriculum units are aligned with the 'ACT Every chance to learn' curriculum framework and fall broadly under three strands:

  • Sustaining water for life: protecting the environment
  • Securing water for life: engineering and water supply
  • Saving water for life: people and place

The centrepiece of the program, the Cotter Dam Education Kit is available here and provides a range of innovative resources in various media formats, such as printed material, CD ROM and videos.

Through the Cotter Dam Education Program local students will learn about the environment and history of the Cotter area and its significance to our city’s water supply. Students are encouraged to visit the Cotter Precinct and to experience the impressive spectacle of Canberra’s new dam during and after construction. ACTEW Water offers tours of the Cotter Dam Discovery Trail for school groups which can be booked by clicking here or phoning (02) 6248 3111.
