Tips for your own garden

      POTS

Pay special attention to the soil in your pots and planters as it can dry out and overheat rapidly. Adding water crystals, organic matter and mulch will help reduce water loss and increase plant health.

WHEN TO WATER

Only water if you need to. You can check soil moisture by digging a small hole near your plants to the same depth as their roots. If the soil is damp to touch, there’s no need to water.

 Butterfly     SOIL

Canberra’s soil is largely clay-based and compacts easily. Apply water slowly to avoid runoff (no more than 2 litres per hour) and mix in other soil types such as sandy loam or organic matter to increase the soil’s capacity to hold water.

MULCH

Mulch can be the key to a healthy, vibrant garden – it keeps the soil cool, suppresses weed growth and reduces evaporation to keep the soil moist. Pea straw, compost, small twigs, straw and shredded leaves are some good choices.

HOW TO WATER

Make sure the water is reaching the roots of your plants. Water the base of your plants instead of the leaves, and water in the coolest parts of the day. Deep watering less frequently will stimulate root growth and train your plants and lawn to become more drought resistant.

 Butterfly     IRRIGATION

Drip irrigation can be the most efficient way to water gardens and lawns and is ideal for most Canberra soils. Know your irrigation systems, checking regularly for faults and breakages.

LAWNS

Coring your lawn once per year helps the soil to breathe and improves water absorption, while letting your grass grow a bit longer decreases evaporation.

Composting is nature’s own recycling system.  On average about half of household waste is organic and can be composted, including food and garden waste. Composting returns nutrients to the soil and increases its water-holding capacity.

FEEDING

Feeding, weeding and aeration are all important for plant and lawn health. Feed your garden up to four times a year and weed regularly.
