Community presentation on the upgrades to Casuarina Sands Recreational Area
August 3, 2009
ACTEW Corporation has recently lodged a Development Application (DA) with the ACT Planning and Land Authority (ACTPLA) for upgrades to the Casuarina Sands Recreational Area and we invite the community to attend a public presentation on 6 August to find out more.
Upgrading facilities at Casuarina Sands was a commitment made by ACTEW as part of the Enlarged Cotter Dam Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and will ensure recreation can continue at the Cotter Precinct during construction works.
"The Cotter Avenue and other parts of the Cotter will be affected by noise and traffic during the construction of the Dam and ACTEW is keen to minimise and mitigate these impacts wherever possible", said Dr Gary Bickford, Program Director, Water Security - Major Projects, ACTEW Corporation.
The DA provides information on the proposed works, including improvements to parking, upgraded facilities and additional shade, BBQs and picnic tables.
ACTEW will be undertaking a community presentation to brief the public on the proposed works at Casuarina Sands and to answer any questions the public may have. This information session will be held on Thursday 6 August, from 6pm to 8pm at the Quality Hotel Woden, Cnr Melrose Drive and Launceston Street, Phillip.
The plan to upgrade facilities has been developed following feedback from the community through sessions such as the My Cotter, My Place consultation. The community has also expressed an interest in being a part of the construction of the Enlarged Cotter Dam. In order to provide the community with a safe option for viewing construction, ACTEW will shortly be lodging a Development Application for the construction of a viewing platform on Moore's Hill." Said Dr Bickford.
The Casuarina Sands DA is on public exhibition from 29 July to 18 August, and members of the community are invited to view the DA documents on the ACTEW and ACTPLA websites. Submissions should be made in writing directly to ACTPLA at PO Box 365, Mitchell ACT 2911 or via email to app.sec@act.gov.au
