Last chance to visit the Enlarged Cotter Dam construction site

November 18, 2011

ACTEW invites Canberrans to enjoy a final ‘behind the scenes’ look at the Enlarged Cotter Dam construction site.

On Saturday 26 November 2011, the worksite gates will be opened to the public for the last time, offering visitors a unique opportunity to get up close to Canberra’s new dam as it rises.

“This is the third time we have opened the worksite, but never before have visitors been able to get this close to the wall or the construction,” said Mark Sullivan, ACTEW’s Managing Director.

“With such close proximity, you can really appreciate the scale and excitement of this historic undertaking. Our staff will be on hand to share their knowledge of the project and to answer all your questions, so come along and witness construction of the highest dam of its type in Australia.”

Visitors to the open day will be able to see roller compacted concrete being placed, talk to the people behind the project and enjoy a scenic riverside walk along the Cotter Dam Discovery Trail. A sausage sizzle and drinks will also be on sale, with all proceeds going to the Snowy Hydro SouthCare Rescue Helicopter.

“We’re pleased that our final open day provides the chance to raise money for a great organisation, with entry by a gold coin donation going to the Snowy Hydro SouthCare Rescue Helicopter.”

Snowy Hydro SouthCare CEO Owen Finegan said “The support of Snowy Hydro SouthCare at this event displays commitment to a local service that is on call to provide emergency medical assistance when needed. Snowy Hydro SouthCare volunteers and staff look forward to seeing the Canberra community support this event.”

When complete, the new Cotter Dam will be 80 metres high, approximately 260 metres wide at its crest and will dwarf the existing 30 metre wall. It will be made by placing approximately a million tonnes of roller compacted concrete, with work continuing 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Access to the Enlarged Cotter Dam construction site will be via an approximately 2.5km (return) easy to moderate walk including stairs.

ACTEW advises visitors to wear enclosed walking shoes, to dress for the weather, wearing a hat and sunscreen and bring drinking water. Queues are expected.

**If you have limited mobility please contact ACTEW prior to the event 6248 3563 as access to some area of the construction site may be limited**

Parking is available at Cotter Bend, which is located off Cotter Road approximately 30 minutes drive from the Canberra CBD. Event signage will be in place to direct visitors.
