Shared Roads Policy
During construction of ACTEW’s water security projects we are minimising the impact on local road networks by exercising traffic management measures that respect all road users. Our Shared Roads Policy is a statement of this commitment. The policy and its implementation are the result of consultation with Roads ACT, ACT Parks Conservation and Lands and local road users including equestrians, cyclists, residents, commercial traffic, tourists, motorcyclists, walkers and emergency services.
What does this mean for Cotter Road users?
A number of measures are planned or already in place for Cotter Road, to guide road users during the construction of the Enlarged Cotter Dam, including:
- signage to highlight the multiple users of the area and promote a culture of respect;
- monitoring of heavy vehicle behaviour including limited use of compression braking;
- driver education, regular reminders and strict enforcement measures for ACTEW water security project teams to uphold appropriate driving behaviour;
- on hand traffic control and information via a (manned) Cotter Road delivery vehicle induction and information bay;
- signage, horse crossings and driver education to safeguard the area for horse riders;
- encouraged reporting of vehicle violations and the use of speed monitoring vans;
- regular updates on the Enlarged Cotter Dam via the ACTEW website, water security information line, flyers, education programs, local community events, media and a traffic fact sheet developed with Roads ACT; and
- ongoing consultation with key road user groups.
Any member of the public can report incidents or dangerous driving behaviour along Cotter Road by phoning 1800 211 242 or emailing watersecurity@actew.com.au
