Commitment to Privacy

ACTEW Corporation Limited (ACTEW) is committed to ensuring the protection of its customers’ personal details and related information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) (the Act) and the National Privacy Principles contained in the Act.

ACTEW will only use personal and general information for purposes directly related to the delivery of water and sewerage services; for the management of Water Conservation Measures in the ACT; and to make improvements to the functionality, useability and accessibility of ACTEW’s web site.

Company Profile

ACTEW owns the water and sewerage assets and business in the ACT and has a 50% investment in ActewAGL which owns and operates the electricity and gas networks in the ACT and parts of the surrounding capital region, and provides billing services to ACTEW’s water and sewerage customers and ActewAGL’s electricity and gas customers. 

ACTEW undertakes its water and sewerage business and related activities under the registered business name of ACTEW Water.

Collection and Retention of Personal and General Information

On behalf of ACTEW, ActewAGL collects, records, stores and uses personal information about ACTEW’s water and sewerage customers for billing purposes. 

ACTEW collects, records, stores and uses customers’ personal information for the purposes of maintaining its water and sewerage network.

ACTEW records and stores personal information about ACT residents who apply for an exemption under the Scheme of Water Conservation Measures which ACTEW administers on behalf of the ACT Government. The information is provided voluntarily by residents.

ACTEW also records and stores personal information about residents who voluntarily provide this information when reporting alleged infringements of the Scheme of Water Conservation Measures; when participating in ACTEW’s community consultation and education programs; or when subscribing to newsletters and other information disseminated by ACTEW.

When someone visits the ACTEW website a record is made of the following general information: IP address as given out by the user’s ISP; proxy server or firewall the user’s top level domain name; the date and time of the visit to the site; the pages accessed;  and documents down-loaded by the type of browser used. This information is aggregated so that it cannot be used to personally identify or contact the user. No attempt will be made to identify users or their browsing activities except where this is permitted by the Act.

Disclosure of Personal Information

Personal information will only be disclosed to a third party in accordance with the Act; in accordance with the terms of the customer’s contract for the provision of water and sewerage services; in consultation with the customer before making a decision to release it; or where the disclosure is required or authorised under another law that applies to ACTEW.
