Googong Dam Spillway Upgrade
What is the Googong Dam Spillway upgrade project?
Since its construction over 30 years ago, the Googong Dam Spillway has had significant erosion and structural damage caused by spill events and rock conditions.
ACTEW Corporation is now conducting remediation work to bring the spillway up to modern design and safety standards. This involves repairing eroded sections and extending the spillway walls to improve flooding capacity.
The project is being delivered by the Bulk Water Alliance which includes ACTEW Corporation working with ActewAGL and alliance partners GHD, Abigroup and John Holland. There are approximately 50 staff working on the project.
Where is the project up to?
Remediation work commenced in February 2009 and has included rock excavation, foundation preparation, anchoring and concrete works. Once complete, the new spillway will be able to safely pass 10,500 cubic metres of water per second, which is approximately four times the normal flow over Niagara Falls.
When will the project be completed?
The project is planned for completion in late 2010.
Can I visit the area?
Public access to the construction site is restricted. Access to the Googong Foreshore area is generally unaffected with the exception of Cascades Swimming Hole, which continues to be closed to ensure public safety during construction.
Other safety measures we have put in place include site fencing, locked gates, signage, traffic management strategies and temporary road closures, particularly for a section of Googong Dam Road during blasting activity. Upon project completion, the site will be rehabilitated and public access to Cascades Swimming Hole will be restored.
