Managing Water Use

The ACT Government's Think water, act water strategy outlines key objectives and targets to ensure sustainable management of ACT water resources.  One of the targets identified in the strategy includes achieving a 12% reduction in per person use of mains water by 2013, and a 25% reduction by 2023.

ACTEW is assisting the ACT Government with strategies to achieve these targets. In March 2006, ACTEW introduced Permanent Water Conservation Measures after a trial with the community. These were designed to help the community meet long-term water saving targets outlined by the Think water, act water strategy by encouraging behavioural change through sensible and easy to follow water use limits.

ACTEW manages temporary water restrictions and Permanent Water Conservation Measures in the ACT. To complement these mandatory schemes, it provides an ongoing program of public information and education initiatives. ACTEW’s 2007 Save water for life material contains many helpful ways in which you can save water whilst adhering to water restrictions. Click here for more information.

To assist in water-saving measures at home, the ACT Government, as part of its Think water, act water strategy, offers a range of water efficiency programs and rebates.  Click here for more information.
