Community invited to Casuarina Sands opening

Monday 4 January 2010 9.20am
ACTEW invites Canberrans to a free community celebration to mark the re-opening of the Casuarina Sands recreation area. The event will include a free BBQ, live entertainment from Annie and the Armadillos and kids activities from The Gecko Gang.

ACTEW Managing Director Mark Sullivan said the event was to encourage people to visit Casuarina Sands and see the new facilities which include additional BBQ’s, shade, picnic tables and improved parking.

“We have done a lot of work at Casuarina Sands to make sure Canberra has a good riverside recreation area while the Cotter Avenue is closed to the public for construction of the Enlarged Cotter Dam”, said Mr Sullivan.

The closure of the Cotter Avenue commences around 4 January 2010 (refer news update published 7 January 2010) as a necessary safety measure due to its close proximity to the construction site with direct impacts from construction traffic, noise and dust. ACTEW has committed to rehabilitate the Cotter Avenue upon completion of the dam works in 2011 to ensure the precinct meets the community’s future needs.

“Community consultation was undertaken in 2009 to gauge the community’s views on what the revitilised Cotter may look like, and we’re working on incorporating the ideas provided into our planning right now,” said Mr Sullivan.

“Meanwhile, I encourage everyone to come along to celebrate the re-opening of Casuarina Sands with us. Don’t forget a picnic rug, swimmers and sunscreen.”
