A Message from Rosary Primary
Education is a many faceted field. In primary schools we are increasingly aware of the need to not only teach children the 3 R’s but also get them on board when the future of our country, in terms of its liveability, is at stake.
Raising awareness of the importance of water conserving is important, and in doing so, we particularly need to reach the population of the future - our students - the grass roots.
If our children understand that conservation of natural resources is possible, then they will educate their parents, and parents are always keen to do the right thing for the sake of their children.
One of the objectives of Grass Roots is to educate not only the students, but also the broader community about ways that will keep our city green through sensible water use. Rosary Primary is honoured to play a vital part in this.
The research will be an integral part of the School curriculum. Now that the grass is established, our students can begin to investigate the needs of the grass to evaluate which of the grass-irrigation combinations is the most water efficient. To do this, Rosary has received a computer from ACTEW, allowing the students to monitor precipitation and evaporation rates. They will also be able to compare the rates of water usage from the subsurface irrigation system with the above ground sprinklers.
At the same time as our students work hard to conserve resources they must also be aware of the need for regular physical exercise to maintain healthy living for themselves. Already we know that this will be a wonderful place on which to teach the skills required by the Physical Education curriculum and for the children to just enjoy playing freely.
This oval is a real asset to our School, both in terms of encouraging our children to enjoy physical activity, but also to understand that by learning to combine water and grass wisely this inviting space will last for many years to come.
